Instagram Carousel Design: Slides People Swipe, Save and Share.
Carousels remain one of the most useful formats for brands because people can learn something in a single swipe-through. Here's how to design them well.
A carousel is a mini presentation inside a feed. Done well, it earns saves and shares because it gives people something worth coming back to. Done poorly, it's a wall of text that gets abandoned on slide two. Here's a structure that works.
Treat Slide 1 Like a Headline
The cover slide decides whether anyone swipes. Use one bold promise or question, large type, and a clear visual hook. Add a subtle swipe cue so people know there's more.
Use a Simple Slide Structure
- Slide 1: the hook or promise.
- Slides 2–7: one point per slide, with a short heading and 1–2 lines of support.
- Final slide: a summary and one clear call to action — follow, save, or contact you.
Sizing and Safe Areas
The 4:5 portrait format (1080×1350 px) takes up more screen space than a square in the feed, so it's a strong default. Keep important text away from the edges, and check how your first slide is cropped in the profile grid before publishing.
Typography That Reads on a Phone
Use no more than two typefaces, keep body text large, and maintain strong contrast between text and background. If you have to squint on your own phone, your audience won't bother.
Keep the Visual Flow Going
Use consistent margins, repeating shapes or a continuous background element across slides so the carousel feels like one piece. Small details like slide numbers or progress dots help people keep going.
Design Once, Reuse Forever
Build a master template with your fonts, colors, grid and a few layout variations. New carousels then become a matter of swapping content, which keeps your feed consistent and your production time low.
What to Track
Watch saves, shares and swipe-through behavior rather than likes alone. Those signals show whether your content is genuinely useful, and they tell you which topics to repeat.
