Cut For The First Two Seconds.
A fast-cut coffee-brand reel edit built in CapCut, optimized for retention in the first two seconds.
Where the project started.
Reel Roast was filming good raw footage — roasting process, pour-overs, the shop itself — but the Reels weren't holding attention. Views were fine; watch-time past the first few seconds wasn't. The footage had no consistent pacing, caption style, or hook structure, so every post performed differently for reasons nobody could pin down.
How it came together.
Hook-First Cutting
Every edit now opens on the most visually interesting three seconds of the clip, not the chronological start of the footage.
Pattern Interrupts
Quick cuts and zoom punches placed specifically where attention tends to drop off, based on watching where past reels lost viewers.
On-Brand Captions
A consistent caption style and placement across every edit, so the brand feels recognizable before a viewer even reads the text.
Sound Design
Trending audio layered with subtle sound effects on key actions — the pour, the grind, the first sip — to add texture without overpowering the clip.
What it added up to.
average retention past 3 seconds
more shares per reel
batch turnaround for consistent posting
We were filming the right things and still losing people in the first two seconds. Once the edits changed, the same footage started performing completely differently.
